Als kunstenaar sta je er vaak alleen voor en spring je in het diepe als je een kunstwerk loslaat.
De Artist in Residence periode geeft me de kans om mijn werk vanuit nieuwe invalshoeken te bekijken. Er is plaats voor experiment, verdieping en ontmoetingen.

In mijn eigen atelier zou ik waarschijnlijk geen gebruikte trouwjurken verknipt hebben om ze daarna te verven met uien. Dankzij de fijne werkruimte in Ellemeet kan ik loskomen uit het leven van alledag en me focussen op mijn werk.

In het eerste jaar start Leeuwenpoort op 1 februari 2023 vanuit drie verschillende Artist-in-Residence locaties. Iedere kunstenaar werkt een aantal weken op elke locatie:

Artist Statement

My “Felled Trees” seem to be there and not there at the same time, memory rather than reality. Surplus beads and jewelry proliferate over the softly shining aluminum trunks like processionary caterpillars, moss or beetles. The cut carpets form the bottom of this fairytale forest of chopped tree trunks.

Jewellery, beads and hand-knotted carpets carry their own history. Smyrna rugs came into fashion during the Reconstruction in the 1950s and, like jewellery, are a symbol of our prosperity. A prosperity that seemed unlimited and could grow to heaven. We are now seeing the disastrous consequences all around us. The tribes become storytellers, silent witnesses. Like real trees, they communicate with each other through an invisible network. They are a layered metaphor for the tension between man, nature and the decline of culture.

Cutting traditional carpets creates a new perspective on traditional patterns and their symbolism. I assemble them like I used to make collages. As in my older collages, these installations interact with the residual space.
In addition, the beaded necklaces and jewelry lead a life of their own. They proliferate, grow, die out and have to make way for other species that are stronger or take up space in large quantities.
